Food for Thought April 3, 2015

Want more "expert level" dishes? Here are a couple more from San Francisco's best!

Mourad Restaurant

What's Special About it:
The menu is pricey, and that's very important information to know at the onset. The food, however, is memorable. Dishes like Caspian caviar on a smoked brioche and applewood-smoked Ōra king salmon will make your craving go ballistic. For those who crave the exotic, the duck liver dish is a "showstopper" and could "pass off as dessert." It is artfully and delicately molded with layers of pistachio genoise, dark chocolate, turnip and bright satsumas.

What Customers Say:
""That is the best restaurant in San Francisco" were the exact words out of my friend's mouth immediately following what I can only describe as an absolutely incredible meal at Mourad. From the massive cross section of a tree root upon your entry to the Moroccan tiles in each of the bathrooms to the wine catwalk and the kitchen spy windows upstairs, everything is beautiful. But you probably want to know about the food and not just the decor."

What Else to Order:
Standouts included the Duck Liver ($20) and the Chicken Wings ($17).

Location:
140 New Montgomery St
Ste 1
San Francisco, CA 94105

Neighborhood:
b/t Natoma St & Minna St in Financial District, SoMa

Frances

What's Special About it:
You know a restaurant is special if you love the soup. Melissa Perello at Frances has created roasted cauliflower fennel soup ($10), which is made of pureed cauliflower and fennel grains (among other ingredients). This dish is perfect with the beignets. And yeah, the menu changes on a daily basis (just like your kitchen!)

What Customers Say:
"At Frances, the menu changes daily, but this neighborhood gem continuously offers modern California dishes based on ingredients from local markets, farms, and producers."

What Else to Order:
applewood smoked bacon beignets, lumberjack cake and  PANISSE FRITES

Location:
3870 17th St
San Francisco, CA 94114

Neighborhood:
b/t Pond St & Noe St in Castro
